About
I'm an independent journalist who has written for the New York Times, Texas Monthly, The Intercept, ProPublica, Vice, Defector, Deadspin, Popular Science, the Village Voice, and more than a dozen other publications in a long and eventful career. My work has been highlighted by Longform, Longreads, and The Sunday Long Read. A feature I wrote for Texas Monthly, called “The Drug Runners,” inspired The Infinite Race (2020), an ESPN 30 for 30. I served as a consulting producer on the documentary. I'm currently working on a book for Algonquin Books about birds and cities.
I've also worked for HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, where I won a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Journalism in 2009. Other TV and film credits include the 2018 World Cup and four Olympics broadcasts; original research for America’s Game and the Iran Hostage Crisis (2015); and associate producer on another 30 for 30, Benji (2012). I began my reporting career in 1999 at the Asbury Park Press in New Jersey.
