About

Originally from Seattle, WA, I lived for many years in the SF Bay Area before my wife and I relocated to Western North Carolina. I teach courses on the campus of the University of North Carolina, Asheville. As a former minister and chaplain who is now a freethinking humanist, I present classes and public lectures on Freethought, Humanism, Christian Nationalism and Naturalistic views of Religion.

My first book, "Meditations of John Muir" was published in 2001, followed by five other books in the "meditations" series. Two further books, "A Freethinker's Gospel" and "Broken Bridges" were both published by professional publishers. Additional self-published works include "Highland Views," "Friendly Freethinker," "Eye to Eye," "One Nature Indivisible," "My Address is a River," and "Beyond the Boundaries of Belief." The current total of published books is 30, with "Humanist Meditations" and "Rambling Reflections for Irreverent Rebels" published in 2023.

I have recently published many of my books as Audiobooks.

Since 2016, I have written a weekly column for the religion pages of a local newspaper affiliated with USA Today (probably the only secular writer for religion pages in the South). I often collect these short essays in book form and publish.

One unique element about my writing and teaching is that, though I left ministry and faith, my wife is an ordained minister and teacher herself. I have friends and family who are people of faith, therefore I am not anti-religious, but actively "building bridges" and seeking "common ground."

I do not write so much for the money but for the pleasure of writing and publishing.
