Author of approximately 400 articles on literacy education. Co-author and co-editor of some ten books published by the National Council of Teachers of English and the International Literacy Association. Former newspaper reporter in Rome, New York, and former newspaper reporter-photographer in Lynchburg, Virginia. Taught high school English in Utica, New York, and reading and English in Rochester, New York. Was a tenured faculty member at Southern Illinois University, University of Alberta, University of Pittsburgh, and the Heckert Professor of Reading and Writing at Miami University (Ohio). Served as chair of the board of trustees of the Live Oak Public Libraries, which oversees 19 libraries in three counties in Georgia. Currently president of the LOPL Foundation.
