BOS statement denouncing antisemitic materials passes 5-0
When they returned from recess at their regular meeting on the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 8, the Board of Supervisors moved back into their regular agenda beginning with an Action Item (ID #7465) from the Administrative Office: Adopt a statement denouncing antisemitic materials distributed in Calaveras County. This agenda item was in response to a request made by District 5 Supervisor Benjamin Stopper during Supervisor Announcements at the previous board meeting on July 25.
Supervisor Announcements are an agenda item found at the end of the agenda of every Board of Supervisors meeting in compliance with Government Code 53232.3(d). The code reads: “Board members shall provide brief reports on any meetings attended at the expense of the local agency, and may make other announcements or report out.”
During Supervisor Announcements on July 25, Stopper said, “I would like the board to entertain a statement by the board as a whole on any antisemitic or hate rhetoric going around; that we do not support those types of things; that we want to keep a positive message for our community as a whole that’s all-inclusive.”
County Counsel Sarah Edwards responded to Stopper’s request, saying, “I can absolutely work with the CEO (Teresa Hitchcock) on that.”
