About

I have been in the children's and YA field for thirty years, beginning with my first picture book, "Alicia Has a Bad Day" (HMH, 1994) which is still in print! I written and illustrated a dozen or so picture books, some early reader comic books, three young adult novels. My most recent chapter book is a surreal, fantasy collection of related short stories, "The Kids of Cattywampus Street" (Penguin/Random House, 2021) which Lemony Snickett called "An extraordinary book." This was an Amazon Editor's pick and number one in short stories for children.

I received my MFA from Emerson College in 1994 and have been teaching ever since and have mentored many students into successful careers as authors, editors, or publicists in the field. I am currently Associate Professor of creative writing at Rowan University in southern New Jersey. I grew up in Maine and still spend every summer on an island 12 miles off the coast where I run a small gallery. I live with my partner who is an illustrator, printmaker, bookmaker, poet and yoga instructor, and our Puerto Rican sato dog, Wally.
