About
Greetings! My name is Katie Sweeting and I’ve been an English professor at Hudson County Community College since 2006. I teach classes such as Composition 1, Speech, World and British Literature, and the Advanced English Seminar. I grew up in sunny Southern California and earned a Bachelor's in Psychology at California State University Northridge - where my dad was a professor. A few decades later, I earned a master’s degree in English at Queens College/CUNY.
In the spring semester of 2022 I was awarded a Fulbright-Nehru grant and lived in India for 3 months, which deepened my appreciation of Indian culture. I taught Creative Writing and Research Methodology to bachelor's and master’s degree students.
I love to read and am a member of JASNA (The Jane Austen Society of North America). I am also a writer, and my historical novel Remnant set in the 18th and 19th centuries was published in April 2024.
I am married with three young adult sons, a daughter-in-law, a grandson, and a cat. We live here in Jersey City.
Featured Work
Remnant
Kidnapped along with her brother Ledu (Olaudah Equiano) at the tender age of eleven, Olu is dragged across Nigeria, deposited on a slave ship for the Middle Passage, and dropped on a rice plantation in Charles Town, South Carolina in 1753. During the Revolutionary War she attempts to escape. Will she succeed? Will she reunite with any of her family members?
Joanna Vassa (daughter of Equiano) is introduced to William Wilberforce and the abolition movement when she is eleven. A biracial orphan, Joanna is raised by her guardian, and while away at boarding school she encounters racist attitudes and struggles to make friends. She seeks information about her Aunt Olu. Will they ever meet?
Remnant is a bildungsroman about two young women of color striving to carve out meaningful lives despite monumental obstacles. Will a family separated by slavery ever be reunited?
