About
My short fiction has appeared in Massachusetts Review, North American Review, and many other journals. PIECES, my first collection, includes stories named for the Pushcart Prize and Sundress Publications’ Best of the Net. THAT VERY PLACE, my second collection, will be published in 2025. The Junior Library Guild and the New York Public Library rank my YA novels among the best books for teens . WHERE YOU BELONG was a finalist for the National Book Award, and I've served on the foundation's panel of judges. After teaching English for almost a decade, I worked as a financial editor, mainly for Bloomberg. I now edit freelance, working with both fiction and nonfiction writers.

WHERE YOU BELONG
A finalist for the National Book Award, WHERE YOU BELONG is the story of thirteen-year-old Fiona, whose family is caught in the throes of a disruptive separation and an eviction from their apartment in the Bronx in 1963. Forced into a situation that she can't understand or control, Fiona does the only thing that makes sense. She runs away. Alone, hungry, with no choices left, she wanders into the all-black neighborhood and meets Yolanda, her old classmate. Fiona and Yolanda spend the day together, a day that will change Fiona for the rest of her life. Though the two girls set out with no greater mission than to see what the day has to offer, Fiona discovers how it feels to pass through the barriers separating her from Yolanda and from herself. Together they learn that beyond the violence, bigotry and chaos that adults leave in their wake, the world makes room for very special connections when two people care about each other.
