About
My first book described the time my brother lost his sight and attended a school for blind adults. At that school, he heard crying every week, but he also found ways to laugh, fell in love, and helped in a downhill ski race with blind skiers. His real life made it easy to write that story. The book is called Walking Out of the Dark and has 4.3 stars on Amazon from 25 reviews.
I’m currently writing about another hard time. It occurred in 2016 when my cancer quickly moved from being annoying to being advanced, stage 4. A new medication allowed me to stay active, but my doctors didn’t know how long it would work. In that case, it was time to do what I love most, so I cycled across the US. On that ride, I laughed, cried, and met a special woman.
My cancer is still in remission. I’ve learned to live with it, cycle more, and appreciate the many great little things in life.

Walking Out of the Dark: Bad look took my brother's sight. With hope and humor, he didn't let it take more.
Even after bad luck took Mike's sight, he still enjoyed an adventure. In one, he helped blind racers ski down a mountain, to impress a woman. Mike says, "You might think skiing without sight is tough, but we had the hard part, since we told them where to turn" Then, he laughs and adds. "That meant standing on a ski slope with blind racers headed right for us." His adventures and jokes help many people work through bad luck, not just blind folks.
This book is based on real events in Minnesota and begins when Mike attends a school for blind adults. A simple lesson is cooking without sight. A challenging lesson is about finding work. Mike learns that adults with low vision have a low chance of returning to work, which becomes his biggest hope. He wants to find a job again, so he can own a house again. He meets many good people at the school, but some cry more than they used to. Others laugh more, and a few compete in downhill ski racing. In this book, all of them help Mike work through bad luck and blindness.
