Canarytown, City of Grief
A collaborative noir crime detective novel co-written with my sister. A Police Detective pursues a serial killer stalking the streets of a south Chicago neighborhood and learns what first looks to be random murders are not random at all. It’s urban Chicago circa 1995, and a street savvy Chicago Police Detective, Kyle McNally, has the lead on a task force following the trail of an interstate serial killer. The investigation tracks McNally and his antagonist, appropriately named by his team, the “Slugger,” through a maze of well-drawn characters, political conspiracies, and unconscionable human greed. Time is against McNally, and with each new victim, the heat on him from his commander increases.
This story exudes a noir detective aura and is populated by a supporting cast of cohorts, criminals, and city scenes that will strike a familiar chord with crime detective story enthusiasts reminiscent of Raymond Chandler and Ross Macdonald. Detective McNally possesses the protagonist’s tenacity seen in Michael Connelly’s “Bosch” detective series.
The story moves with powerful momentum, driven by a combination of action, fluid scene changes, and multiple intertwined sub-plots possessing many twists and backstory intrigues. It is the first of a three-book series featuring McNally. The sequel, Cigar City Crimes, is due for publication in September, 2022.
