About
Peggy Reiff Miller is the recognized expert on the history of the "seagoing cowboys" and the Heifer Project, today's Heifer International. She writes a twice-monthly blog telling stories from her two decades of research and interviews with the men who delivered livestock to the war-torn countries of World War II. She has written articles about this history for Heifer International's World Ark magazine, The Pennsylvania Magazine, Catoctin History, and Highlights for Children, among others. Her children's picture book THE SEAGOING COWBOY is a top-ten, all-time bestseller for its small independent publisher Brethren Press. Her speaking invitations have come from a variety of venues all across the country, including museums and heritage centers, libraries, churches, and schools.
Curiosity about her grandfather's experience as a seagoing cowboy to Poland in 1946 and the desire to write a young adult novel about it led her into this research nook that has become her passion. Realizing she was uncovering a hidden history, her focus changed to that of documenting and sharing this little-known history. Her work has taken her down paths and opened doors unimaginable to her when she started on this journey. Her seagoing cowboy website (www.seagoingcowboys.com) has brought requests to her for information and collaborations from as far away as Poland, Finland, Japan, Germany, and Korea. Currently in the works are plans for an exhibition on the seagoing cowboys in Gdansk, Poland.
Her current work-in-progress is a nonfiction book for adults about the first decade of the Heifer Project. She is also entertaining the possibility of a limited-series docudrama with an interested party.
