Derek is a writer, editor and sports data technician living in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood after moving from Chicago in late 2019. Currently, he is a freelance writer and editor while working on his debut novel, Blackburn.

A sports fanatic, Derek has covered every game under the sun for the past eight years with stops in sports journalism, sports data and sports tourism. In 2019 he was the managing editor of the 392-page 2020 Sports Planning Guide for Premier Travel Media, as well as the managing editor of Reunions Workbook, where he oversaw the latter’s transition into becoming Destination Reunions. Prior to PTM Derek worked as a sports data analyst/specialist and Major League Baseball writer/editor at STATS. Before that, he was the sports editor of The Lake Forest Leader and The Highland Park Landmark newspapers, weekly publications of 22nd Century Media.

A sports reporter since 2010, Derek has written for a variety of local and national media outlets. In addition to penning a story on prep hockey for Chicagoly Magazine–which was a finalist for ‘Best Sports Story’ at the 2017 Peter Lisagor Awards– his work has been featured on FantasyPros, Bleacher Report and for The Hockey Writers. Prior to 22nd Century Media, he also covered prep sports for The Kane Country Chronicle and Chicagoland Soccer.

Derek graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications from Grand Valley State University in 2013. While there he split his time between working on both the news and sports sides of the school’s newspaper, The Lanthorn, playing baseball for the school’s club team, working for Grand Valley Television as a producer and sports analyst, co-hosting a radio show and doing the play-by-play broadcasts for GV’s national champion club hockey team.

In his spare time Derek is an avid baseball, football, soccer and hockey fan with a penchant for playing softball, kickball, soccer and volleyball. A lifelong supporter of the White Sox, he had mixed feelings about living just blocks from Wrigley Field for four years. In addition to journalism, Derek coached travel baseball in 2014 and 2015.
