Born in Minnesota, educated at Carleton College (Northfield, MN 1972), University of Minnesota (JD 1977), and Case Western Reserve University (PhD American History, 2006), my early career involved criminal tax litigation for the Tax Division, Department of Justice, Washington, DC, white collar crime for the United States Attorney, Eastern District of Michigan, and private practice in Detroit, Michigan. After earning a PhD, I taught for two years as a visiting assistant professor before attempting a career writing history. I am married with two adult daughters.

The story of this particular bankruptcy court also illustrates the historical evolution of bankruptcy as an American institution.
