About

I am an arts critic, cultural journalist and essayist with a specialty in photography; my book, THE HOMOEROTIC PHOTOGRAPH: Male Images from Durieu/Delacroix to Mapplethorpe, originally published by Columbia University Press in 1992, was reissued in a 2012 paperback edition. In late 2021, my biography of the 20th Century American gay cosmopolitan photographer George Platt Lynes (1907-1955) was published by Oxford University Press: GEORGE PLATT LYNES: THE DARING EYE is the first full-length life of this exceptional photographer of major 20th Century artists and writers; of the classical dance presented by the early American companies of choreographer George Balanchine; of fashionable women presented in such magazines as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar; of mythological subjects from antiquity; of Surrealist dream imagery; and of the the human figure, especially the male nude.

I have published in both specialized and mass market journals and magazines (Art in America, The Village Voice, and American Photographer, among others). Most recently, I have written online cultural commentary for TABLET and film reviews for The Forward. I am a regular contributor to the Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide. A few works of my short fiction have been published in print and online, including a chapter from my novel THE FRENCH PROFESSOR in the online Lodestar Quarterly. I am currently seeking representation for that novel as well as another completed in the mid-2000s.
