Lianna Marie is the founder of AllAboutParkinsons.com, a website which connects people affected by Parkinson’s disease from all over the world.
Since 2005, the website and associated forum has had more than 1.5 million visitors and helped tens of thousands of people with Parkinson’s, their families, and their caregivers.
Lianna studied psychology and nursing in her university days but didn’t find her true calling until many years later.
After living with Parkinson’s for about ten years, her mom realized there wasn't much information available on the disease that was being delivered by someone who had learned from living with it. Every book she found was written by a doctor, most of whom sounded like they were writing to other doctors--in other words, they wrote in language that wasn't always easy to understand.
In response to this realization, Lianna interviewed hundreds of people with Parkinson’s and researched ways to help them. She then compiled the information, along with her mom’s discoveries over the years, into her first book, Everything You Need to Know About Parkinson’s Disease (2005, revised edition 2015).
Since its publication, the book has been sold in almost fifty countries worldwide and ranked numerous times on the Amazon bestseller list for books about Parkinson’s.
In addition, Lianna wrote Everything You Need to Know About Caregiving for Parkinson’s Disease (2016), a guide to help anyone caring for someone with PD. Lianna has served as her mom’s caregiver and advocate for the past twenty years through the many stages of the disease. She has also been interviewed on local radio stations for her extensive knowledge of caring for someone with Parkinson’s.
Lianna was born and raised near Toronto, Canada, where winters are long, and summers are hot and humid. After a friend introduced her to the temperate climate of the west coast in her late twenties, she moved to the oceanside city of Victoria, British Columbia and never looked back. She later met her husband and moved to the Seattle, Washington area where she has been living for the past four years.
Lianna is a member of the Author's Guild and the Pacific Northwest Writers Association. An accomplished athlete, she has medaled internationally while representing Canada in both modern pentathlon and swimming.
When she’s not writing or researching, you’ll find Lianna in the swimming pool, training for her next swimming competition.
