I was a book and magazine writer for many decades, beginning in the 70s. In an era of first person journalism I had articles published in Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, Harper's, New York, Playbill, Family Circle and Redbook. In 1976 my first book, a memoir called How to Love a Member of the Opposite Sex, was published. In 1981 my book The Cinderella Complex was published by Simon and Schuster and was on The New York Times best seller list for 26 weeks. It became an international best seller, translated into 26 languages (most recently, in 2018, in Turkish ). I've had 8 books published, most of them related to the psychology of women.

In 2002 I decided I wanted to become a psychoanalyst and I entered a graduate program at Smith College in clinical social work, which degree qualified me to gain admittance to a psychoanalytic training institute. I began training in New York in 2004, at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, and received my certificate in psychoanalysis in 2009. I have a private psychotherapy practice in Manhattan. For the past 5 years I've worked on a memoir thst is close to completion.
