I'm a writer, editor, author, columnist, blogger at ArtsJournal.com/JazzBeyondjazz, with 40 years experience and a specialty with jazz, blues, new and unusual music. Besides my books Miles Ornette Cecil - Jazz Beyond Jazz and Future Jazz, I've written for newspapers and magazines internationally, starting with the Chicago Daily News and including DownBeat, The Wire (UK), Swing Journal and Jazz Life (Japan), Bravo (Brazil), Billboard, the Village Voice, the Washington Post, City Arts (NYC), Ear, RhythmMusic, etc. and was general editor of the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Jazz and Blues. I script, voice produce arts reports for National Public Radio. I've written a crime novel, On Your Mark, and a musical theater one-act, Keeping Up With The '80s, in collaboration with comic artist Michael Smith. For 28 years I was adjunct faculty at New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies teaching Writing About the Arts as well as courses on music. I've lectured at Berklee College of Music, University of Jordan (Amman), Dartmouth College, the New School, throughout Armenia and Kiev for the US State Dept., and am president of the Jazz Journalists Association, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit professional organization.
