About
A former newspaper journalist, Susan J. Hudson works for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a public communications specialist. She recently published several short stories and creative nonfiction in literary magazines, and her Revolutionary War-era historical novel, FLINTLOCKS AT DAWN, is currently on submission.
FLINTLOCKS AT DAWN is an adaptation of Rafael Sabatini's classic swashbuckling adventure Scaramouche brought to America, with duels fought with flintlock pistols instead of swords. The first 50 pages of this work won the 2026 History Through Fiction manuscript prize, and an excerpt was published on the History Through Fiction website as the short story "Lords and Ladies."
Her short fiction has appeared in Sky Island Journal, Hoxie Gorge Review, Gramercy Review, The Argyle Literary Magazine, Quibble Lit, Meniscus Literary Journal and others. She has also published creative nonfiction in Tangled Locks Journal and Main Street Rag, and her poetry will appear in a future issue of Alabama Literary Review. She is an active member of the Authors Guild, the Historical Novel Society, and the North Carolina Writers' Network.
