About
Mariela Haack is an author, attorney, and the founder of The Abuse Survivor’s Toolbox, a bilingual publishing and educational project focused on coercive control, post-abuse recovery, and the restoration of personal agency.
Her work examines what happens after survival: the often-overlooked period when a person may be physically free from abuse but still confronting its effects on decision-making, self-trust, relationships, identity, and the ability to navigate legal and institutional systems.
Drawing on her professional background as an attorney and former law-firm shareholder, as well as lived experience, Haack translates complex ideas about coercion, trauma, and institutional response into practical frameworks survivors can use without surrendering authority over their own choices. Her work is grounded in a central principle: support should scaffold agency, not replace it.
She is the author of The Abuse Survivor’s Toolbox and its companion resources, including the Clarity, Safety, and Agency Toolkits. Her work is published in English and Spanish and extends beyond the books through the Toolbox Lexicon, essays, educational resources, and public advocacy.
Haack is currently developing an expanded edition of The Abuse Survivor’s Toolbox and additional nonfiction exploring the long-term costs of survival, including decisional paralysis, self-judgment, isolation, memory doubt, and the difficult work of rebuilding a life that is no longer organized around abuse.
She is also a fiction writer whose current work explores power, memory, identity, violence, and survival.

The Abuse Survivor's Toolbox
The Abuse Survivor’s Toolbox is a practical guide for navigating the often-overlooked aftermath of abuse and coercive control: the period when the immediate danger may have passed, but survivors are still confronting difficult decisions, damaged self-trust, cognitive overload, legal and institutional systems, and the work of rebuilding an independent life.
Written by attorney and survivor Mariela Haack, the book combines trauma-informed understanding with concrete tools for restoring clarity, safety, and personal agency. Rather than prescribing what survivors should do, it offers frameworks for evaluating options, recognizing patterns of coercion, setting boundaries, navigating high-stakes decisions, and rebuilding confidence in their own judgment.
At its core is a simple principle: recovery should not replace one source of control with another. The goal is not to give survivors better instructions, but to help them recover the ability to make choices that belong to them.
Accessible, direct, and grounded in both professional and lived experience, The Abuse Survivor’s Toolbox is designed for survivors rebuilding after abuse as well as advocates, professionals, and others seeking to better understand the practical realities of recovery.
