About
Willie E. Brake is a Detroit-based technology journalist, analyst, and author whose writing comes from 25 years on the front lines of the digital divide. He is the founder of Web Media Syndicate (webmediasyndicate.com), an independent technology analysis and media company, where he serves as senior industry analyst and reporter covering AI, hardware, cybersecurity, and consumer technology in plain language for everyday readers and business leaders alike. His work there includes The Signal Brief, a newsletter with the motto "Signal in the noise," and The Voices Desk, an initiative that tells the stories of people and businesses overlooked in mainstream tech coverage. He is also launching "Hey Willie," a syndicated technology advice column answering reader questions in community, local, and national newspapers.
He is currently writing Rebooted: A Detroit Story, a biographical novel drawn from his life as a lifelong Detroiter born with a disability who built a business, a career, and a community on Michigan Avenue.
In 2001 Willie founded All About Technology, a minority-owned, DOBE-certified computer sales, repair, and refurbishment company in Detroit's Chadsey Condon neighborhood, where his "Refurbished Computers, $200" model helped put affordable technology in thousands of Detroit homes. He teaches business and computer technology at Wayne County Community College District and is pursuing a doctoral pathway toward a full-time professorship. He holds an MBA with executive education from Harvard Business School, the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and the Stanford Graduate School of Business, along with A+, MCP, and MOS certifications.
His digital inclusion work has been recognized with the Spirit of Detroit Award and a Detroit City Council Testimonial Resolution (2026), proclamations from Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans, and Congressman Shri Thanedar, and selection to Leadership Detroit Class 47. He is a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Twenty-Five Years of Business, and Still Invisible in My Own City
An op-ed published in The Telegram on the 25th anniversary of All About Technology, the Detroit computer repair and refurbishment business Willie Brake founded in 2001. Ten days after that milestone, the City of Detroit contracted an out-of-state nonprofit to distribute refurbished laptops to seniors — the exact work Brake has done on Michigan Avenue for a quarter century. The piece traces how a certified, minority- and disability-owned local business can be passed over by the very city it serves, argues that the problem is institutional habit rather than malice, and closes with a direct appeal to Mayor Mary Sheffield that costs the city nothing: put Detroit's own businesses on Detroit's resource lists.
