About
I am doing what I hope is a final rewrite of a creative nonfiction book entitled The Making of a Wife Rapist: Peeling Back the Layers of Time. In this book, I tell Art’s stories in his own words. I move back and forth between the present and the past, peeling back the layers of time to reveal how this good-looking, educated white man from a seemingly normal, loving, and respectable family and community became who he is. Art raped his wife Elena, molested their niece, and masturbated to rape and snuff porn for 19 years.
Elena gave him an ultimatum: attend a residential sex offender treatment program or I will tell the police you raped me. “I don’t mind trading a hundred thousand dollars to not go to prison for ten years,” Art told me. From one decision to another, beginning before he was five years old, he was on a steady march to a sex offender treatment program and losing everything.
I am a professor emerita from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, USA, and among the Top 0.4% of scholars worldwide in terms of quality according to the most recent 2024 ScholarGPS rankings. The Making of a Wife Rapist: Peeling Back the Layers of Time
In this work of creative nonfiction, I show how a little boy named Art made early choices that set off a domino effect. Beginning before the age of five, he made a series of decisions that put him on a steady march toward a sex offender treatment program—ultimately costing him everything. He did care about who he hurt along the way. He said about his sexual behaviors, This is "my own little area, this sexuality area, where I don’t care. I don’t compare it to the rest of the world. I just do whatever I want.” I tell Art’s stories in his own words. I move back and forth between the present and the past, peeling back the layers of time to reveal how this good-looking, educated white man from a seemingly normal, loving, and respectable family and community became who he is.
