About
Bradley L. Garrett is a cultural geographer, photographer and writer whose work takes place in the spaces beneath and beyond the everyday city — tunnels, bunkers, sewers, drains, ruins and the tops of skyscrapers.
He is the author of five books translated into four languages. Bunker: Building for the End Times (Penguin / Simon & Schuster, 2020), an account of four continents of doomsday prepping, was named a Book of the Year by Sir Richard Evans in the New Statesman. Explore Everything: Place-Hacking the City (Verso, 2013), an ethnography of the London Consolidation Crew, was chosen by The Observer among the best architecture books of the year and optioned for film. He is currently writing Groundbreaking: How Tunnels Define the Modern World for St. Martin's Press, research for which has taken him a kilometre beneath the Australian Alps and into the ancient underground cities of Cappadocia.
Garrett has written for The Atlantic, the Guardian, GQ, Vox, the Financial Times and The Telegraph, alongside more than fifty peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. His work has appeared on 60 Minutes, 99% Invisible, The Joe Rogan Experience, National Geographic and the BBC, and he features in Underland (2025), nominated for Best Documentary Feature at Tribeca. He hosts the Tenacity podcast for Ubisoft Entertainment.
He holds a PhD from the University of London and has held research and teaching posts at Oxford, Sydney, Southampton and University College Dublin. He is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Sydney and a Senior Fellow at the Homeland Defense Institute. He lives in the Mojave Desert in California.
