I’m Steven T. Duff, a cozy mystery author, storyteller, and quiet observer of small towns and the secrets they keep.

I grew up in a home where the porch light was always on for a neighbor who needed to talk. I learned earlier that some of the best stories are found in ordinary people and unexpected moments. Family gatherings inevitably became storytelling sessions, where familiar tales grew a little taller with every retelling. Those experiences became my first lessons in suspense, the power of a well-timed pause, a raised eyebrow, and the one detail someone chooses not to reveal.

That same philosophy shapes the mysteries I write today. I believe a mystery should play fair with its readers. The clues should be there. The red herrings should be earned. And when the truth is finally revealed, an attentive reader should be able to look back and realize the answer was hiding in plain sight all along. For me, the pleasure of a great mystery lies not only in the surprise, but in the satisfaction of noticing what others overlooked.

My stories are equally driven by characters. I love writing about florists, bakers, retired teachers, shopkeepers, gallery curators, and other seemingly ordinary people who suddenly find themselves caught in extraordinary circumstances. Around them are close-knit communities filled with friendships, rivalries, old grudges, whispered rumors, and secrets that refuse to stay buried.

In my books, the town itself often becomes a character. I want readers to arrive for the mystery but stay because they’ve fallen in love with the people, the places, and the feeling that something unexpected might be waiting just around the corner.

When I’m not writing, you can often find me refilling everyone’s coffee, wandering through flea markets in search of objects that seem to have stories already attached to them, or taking the long way through an unfamiliar town simply to see what might be hiding around the next corner.
