Way back in 1979 the University of North Carolina Press published my scholarly book on Catholic responses to persecution In Elizabethan England, based on my Ph.d dissertation in the Yale history department. I then had to do other things for a career. Then I inherited my father's WWII army footlocker, which turned out to contain hundreds of letters and other documents from his time in the army and from the two years after the war, when he worked for the UN's refugee and displaced persons agency. As a trained historian and an avocational storyteller, this was right up my alley, and I have told a story based on some of those letters to dozens of audiences, to enthusiastic receptions. I have also created a manuscript made mostly of excerpts from the letters, with explanations by me. This is gritty, street-level history, which even people who are not history buffs can relate to. I am hoping to get a publisher interested.
