HASH Chronicles, Part I: I Know What I Know is a memoir of a nineteen-year-old California kid who set out for Europe in the fall of 1966 with a journal, a backpack, and no particular plan — and came home three months later carrying considerably more than he left with.
The book follows galen easton’s journey from JFK to Reykjavik to Glasgow, south through Spain to the Strait of Gibraltar, and across into Morocco and Algeria — where he falls in with a young Dutch traveler named Gottfried, whose vivid prophetic dreams map out a course through the Moroccan mountains and toward a commercial enterprise neither of them fully understood the weight of at nineteen. The memoir is the story of that journey: the partnership, the risk, the borders crossed, and the long retroactive reckoning with what it all meant — including the discovery, sixty years later, of who Gottfried really was.
Part I finishes with two young men standing on French soil, having run a gauntlet that could have ended very differently. Part II — …But I Don’t Know What I Don’t Know — follows the consequences home.
