About
I grew up in East Tennessee, the son of a college professor of education and an elementary school teacher. In college I earned a BA in psychology and a minor in creative writing--the later under the tutelage of the great Appalachian poet Jeff Daniel Marion. In seminary I worked as a staff writer for a weekly denominational news journal. After seminary, I spent several years as a minister before pursuing a PhD in child and family studies and becoming a licensed marriage and family therapist. I then spent 16 years as a university professor before transitioning to full-time work as a therapist and part-time as a free-lance writer. I am married and have two adult children and two adult step children.

I wrote this memoir after completing my PhD and while looking for a teaching position, working odd jobs. I examine mistakes I made and what I considered the most important lessons I learned early in my career.
