About
I spent a lifetime in journalism, covering politics, world affairs and business. His work, mostly in television, but also for newspapers and magazines, was always non-fiction. Iwas one of the first employees at CNN, beginning before the network even went on the air. When I left, just after covering 9/11, I had risen to Vice President and Director of News Planning.
David has a closet full of Emmys, Murrows and others. But as I wrote in my new novel, journalists give themselves more awards than any industry outside of Hollywood.
David spent a half dozen years as Senior Investigative Producer for the nationally syndicated news program Full Measure from 2016 to 2021 before taking a flyer and moving to Alaska’s News Source as Executive Producer of the state’s only investigative unit.
MY life in Alaska was so unexpected and challenging, when I left in 2024, I was inspired for the first time to try fiction. “Two Years on Another Planet…. or is it Alaska?” is the result; a highly fictionalized account of my time in The Last Frontier.

Two Years on Another Planet....or is it Alaska?
Two Years on Another Planet…. or is it Alaska? Is a workplace dramedy set in the wildest environment on this or any planet. The team at Alaska's only TV newsroom try their best to keep residents of the largest, loneliest and most isolated part of the country informed. They do it while avoiding wild moose, angry bears, and angrier politicians...all while suffering through piles of snow and months of dark. You'll wonder how some of the staff at Alaska's News Spot ever got hired, but then, who you gonna get who's any better up there?
Nearing the likely end of his journalism career, Dan Rilman moves to Alaska as Executive Producer of the state's only investigative news team. He immediately butts head with his oddball chief reporter Jeff Taggert. Somehow, they must figure out a way to work together and cover the entire giant state of Alaska. Their most persistent adversary is Anchorage Mayor Maeve Grambel. One of her ideas is to give homeless people fishing gear so they can feed themselves. The Alaska News Spot newsroom is filled with hardworking, dedicated staffers, but not necessarily folks who'd find work elsewhere.
