I am a free-range scholar and creative. I edit two Substack newsletters, When the Field is Online, about research methods (http://tinyurl.com/qualnews), and Reimagine Research (https://reimagineresearch.substack.com), about research and careers. As an creative I enjoy art journaling and facilitate workshops in arts and reflective writing. I create illustrations and graphics to complement my writing.

I am the author of 12 books about online research and education including A Guide for Qualitative Researchers in a Connected World (in press), Doing Qualitative Research Online (2022), Collaborating to Succeed in Higher Education and Beyond with Narelle Lemon (2021), Publishing from your Doctoral Research: Create and Use a Publication Strategy with Helen Kara (2020), Learning to Collaborate, Collaborating to Learn (2019), and Find the Theory in Your Research (2019), Getting Data Online (2019).

I previously managed Sage Publications' research community, Methodspace. I also served as a faculty member and dissertation supervisor in the doctoral program at Capella University where I was honored with the Harold Abel Distinguished Faculty Award for 2011-2012 and the Steven Shank Recognition for Teaching in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. I am an honorary fellow in the Textbook and Academic Authors Association and received the Mike Keedy Award "in recognition of enduring service to authors."

I received a B.S. in Adult and Community Education from Cornell University; an M.A. in Social Policy Studies from the SUNY Empire State College, and a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies and Educational Leadership at the Union Institute & University. I live and work in Boulder, Colorado.
