About
Steven was born and raised in the rural south before the time of instant, on demand entertainment. His parents were voracious readers and sparked a love of books within him from a very early age. When night fell and chores for the day were complete, he and his family read until bedtime. Anything not taken by a sibling was fair game for his next read. Steve developed an interest in science fiction, history and western novels on his own. During idle times at his father’s auto repair shop, he sat in the heat of long summer afternoons listening to his father and other kin relate highly embellished accounts of mostly mundane daily affairs. These bull sessions gave him a deep appreciation for a story well told. When he wasn’t helping at his dad’s shop, he worked as a short order cook. This employment lasted throughout high school and his first year of college. Undergraduate and graduate studies at The University of Mississippi broadened his horizons and further developed his love of the written word.
While at Ole Miss, he participated in Air Force ROTC, earning a commission and entering active duty service as a Second Lieutenant, serving thirty years, retiring at the rank of colonel. As a writer, Steve draws upon experiences and memories collected during travels around the world as an Air Force officer. Many of these experiences found their way into the Distant Traveler Trilogy. After retiring in 2015, Steve decided it was time to get serious about a lifelong passion for writing. Since 2015, Steven’s work has been published in Mississippi Magazine, The Galway, Ireland Review, New Orleans Living and The Daily Corinthian and Deily Leader Newspapers. Steven has also authored nine books, including the Distant Traveler series and one hundred and twenty short stories about life in the rural south.
