Gloria DeGaetano, M.Ed., is the founder and CEO of the Parent Coaching Institute (PCI), a global company offering Parent Coach Certification® for family professionals, coaching services for moms and dads, and specialized programs for companies and organizations.
An internationally acclaimed educator, author, and parent coach, Gloria brings a wide-range of experiences to her present work. She has been a middle school and high school classroom teacher, an elementary reading specialist, and a school district administrator directing reading and language arts programs, K-8. She has taught at Seattle Pacific University and the University of Washington in teacher training and graduate programs. Her specialties include psycholinguistics and literacy development, personality and learning styles, intrinsic motivation, systems thinking applications, appreciative inquiry, and brain-compatible practices in teaching, learning, and parenting. She has written curriculum for various districts and agencies including a media literacy violence prevention program for Mothers Against Violence and a media literacy curriculum for children ages 2-4 for US Head Start programs.
Gloria is considered a trailblazer in the field of media/digital literacy with her ground- breaking books: Screen Smarts: A Family Guide to Media Literacy with Kathleen Bander (Houghton Mifflin, 1996); her book on media violence, A Call to Action Against TV, Movie, and Video Game Violence with Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, (Harmony Books, 1999, revised, 2014), and Parenting Well in a Media Age: Keeping Our Kids Human, (Personhood Press, 2006) which won the 2007 i-Parenting Media Award for excellence. Her most recent book, Patterns Over Time: A Research Summary: Screen Time and Healthy Development (Creative Source Publishers, 2023) has received wide acclaim from parents and professionals, alike. Gloria's books, articles, and parenting tools have been translated into Spanish, German, Danish, Romanian, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Greek, and Turkish.
A respected voice for children and parents, Gloria’s ideas and articles have appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Beijing Parent, American Baby Magazine, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, The Wall Street Journal, La Tribune, The London Times, The Observer, Better Homes and Garden, Redbook, American Way of American Airlines, Appreciative Inquiry (AI) Practitioner, Healthline, and Spirit Magazine of Southwest Airlines.
Gloria is a Certified Practitioner in Appreciative Inquiry from the David L. Cooperrider Center for Appreciative Inquiry at Champlain College, and holds a Certification in Transformational Leadership from The Hartford Seminary and a Systems Development Certification from the Capra Institute. She is a member of the Authors’ Guild, the Alliance for Independent Authors, and the Institute for Coaching.
Gloria is the mother of two adult sons. She lives in Bellingham, WA—a poster city for the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
