Beyond The Numbers
Beyond the Numbers Synopsis
All twelve-year-old Japanese American Hailey Andrews hopes for is to be ordinary. However, how can you be ordinary when you’re going into seventh grade? Numbers are a puzzle, and bewildering math equations like X + Y = Z make no sense. In Hailey’s mind, it has always been this way, and she doesn’t understand why, which makes attending middle school even more challenging. Despite a disastrous last day of sixth grade, Hailey knows that middle school and seventh grade present new opportunities to start over, meet new people, and encounter new teachers.
Having the opportunity to begin anew, Hailey and her best friends Alden and Griffin embark on a new adventure as their seventh-grade year starts with a bang: a new, unexpected friend—literally! At the beginning of her first day, Hailey meets a lost dog, a Golden Retriever, which she names Zero. But Hailey also meets her new teacher, Mr. Bradley, who teaches her that numbers and math may be fun and valuable, even if she doesn’t realize it or want to embrace the idea of doing math. Could Zero and Mr. Bradley be the key to helping Hailey unlock her true talent?
Now, just as Hailey’s navigating seventh grade with her family, friends, and Zero by her side, she finally discovers why math and numbers feel so confusing to her with the help of Mr. Bradley. As Hailey learns to embrace her newfound learning disability—dyscalculia—and her talent in writing and storytelling, Mr. Bradley suffers a horrible accident at the expense of Zero. How can Hailey find her way forward in her world full of bullies, shifting friendships, and change?
Beyond the Numbers proves that embracing what makes you ordinary might be what makes you extraordinary.
