About
A former registered nurse, I practiced and taught nursing for more than 20 years. I worked in the publishing field for more than 30 years, starting as a writer and editor at Weekly Reader’s mid-level science magazine and finishing as a healthcare textbook publisher for F. A. Davis in Philadelphia.
I have written four nonfiction books for young adults, written or edited more than 750 health, life, and earth science articles, and managed the publication from beginning to end of dozens of healthcare textbooks and reference books. I am a Consultant and Fellow of the National Writing Project, and I have earned two Feature Writing awards from the Association of Educational Publishers, now a division of the American Association of Publishers.
I am retired and married to a marvelous woman. Together we have four children and five grandchildren. We live in Saint Petersburg, Florida, with our two dogs, Lola and Georgie. I love golf, books, and desserts, not necessarily in that order.
Featured Work
The Doctors’ Riot of 1788: Body Snatching, Bloodletting, and Anatomy in America
This book reveals the forgotten history of the so-called Doctors' Riot of 1788, a riot not by doctors by against doctors and their students for stealing bodies from a White cemetery. Along the way the book explains the history of body snatching in the United States and England and explores the moral questions behind an existential medical crisis: Does the need for medical students to learn anatomy on cadavers override society’s demand for maintaining the dignity of its dead?
