On My Brother's Shoulders: An African American Anthology and Tribute to People of Color
On My Brother's Shoulders is an amazingly poetic tribute to countless African American legends, featuring an intimate running dialogue with Angela Davis, Michael Eric Dyson, and Howard Bingham (producer of major Motion Picture Film "Ali"), as they share their unique experiences with critical moments in history, including the brutal lynching of Emmett Till, a fourteen year old African American youth that would serve as a precursor to the early civil rights movement. Simpson forms the interviews as an American essayist and poet, allowing readers to move fluidly through events. In this book, Simpson takes readers on a journey through the African American experience. Her version of history retold in poetic terms is a refreshing tribute to the life of Emmett Till. Her honesty, courage and thought provoking verses will leave readers pondering just how deeply African Americans were affected by race related events and discrimination in the U.S. Simpson senses the worth involved in honoring the lives of those who contributed to the struggle for justice and equality in America.
Simpson asserts, "It is more important than ever that African Americans retell our stories from our own perspective. It is imperative that we do not allow these important testimonies, nor our oral history to be erased. It is our responsibility to pass these stories on to both the current and future generations, so that they are inspired to strive for GREATNESS and to use their talents and gifts to enlighten the world, knowing that all things are truly possible for them. We can't afford to wait for someone else to teach the world about our history, it's up to each and every one of us that have been blessed with an opportunity that our ancestors did not have. The Jewish people have declared to the world, never again. and I believe it's just as important for America to stand behind African Americans as well, in the hope of making amends and striving for a better future that does not disregard this painful past. Our Great Grandmothers and Grandfathers and those who came before them were sold away to each of the four corners of the Earth. Children were separated from their parents in slavery, husband from wives, and wives from husbands. Our families were stolen and even our family surnames taken away, our loved ones were sold off to separate coasts, some never to lay eyes on their loved ones again. We have survived lynchings, Black men being castrated, women and children raped, and beaten bloody, sometimes beyond recognition. Our homes and cities that were once prosperous were burned down to the ground as in the case of Black Wall Street which was a thriving African American community destroyed during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. For more than four hundred years we have endured these sufferings, and even still struggle to this day with being the recipients of racism and brutality. So it is just as imperative that both the United States and World at large declare in like manner that these evils of the past that we have known, shall not ever be again. And until we reach that point as a society and line up our politics, policies and agenda to support this; we will continue to struggle as a humanity because justice has not been paid. By telling these stories, we shed light on those whose lives were stolen and declare for them with one great resounding voice, Never Again!"
Simpson's book is definitely a must read!
