About

I have been writing about jazz music for over 40 years. I am the biographer of the great American jazz pianist and composer James P. Johnson. My first book about him was published in 1986 by Scarecrow Press (now Roman and Littlefield) and the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies. Entitled "A Case of Mistaken Identity- The Life and Music of James P. Johnson." In 2021 I completed a Masters degree in Jazz History and Research at Rutgers- Newark, NJ, and have published several articles about jazz in scholarly and other periodicals. I've written CD liner notes, concert programs, and given many lectures and presentations about jazz and Johnson. In preparation is my new much expanded biography about James P. Johnson entitled, "The Quiet Man Who Made the Twenties Roar- The Life and Music of James P. Johnson." with expected publication date of fall 2025 by the University Press of Mississippi. I am a practicing physician at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore where I am the Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
