About the Service

Hello, I am a narrative nonfiction author available for writing or research assignments, particularly projects with a history emphasis. I am also available for opportunities as a writer or researcher for podcasts, streaming television, or films. Moreover, I would welcome opportunities to provide my writing, research and editorial expertise to video game narrative design teams and individuals, especially (though not exclusively) for projects about, inspired by, or informed by history.

My nonfiction superpower: digging deep for seemingly obscure but critical sources from history, vetting their credibility, and contextualizing them (or simply finding fascinating but overlooked or forgotten stories amid such sources). I'm the author of the Kirkus-starred biography of wartime journalist Melville Jacoby, Eve of a Hundred Midnights (William Morrow, 2016), and I'm currently working on my next book, tentatively titled Border War (Chicago Review Press, TBD), about a deployment of armed LAPD officers to blockade California's statelines during the Great Depression. Outlets that have featured my writing and reporting include Fortune, The Guardian, Atlas Obscura, Portland Monthly, High Country News and Pacific Standard, and in 2019 I wrote and researched the six-part Great Depression season of the Wondery podcast American History Tellers. Before freelancing and grad school at USC's Annenberg school I was the editor of the Ventura County Reporter and a staff writer at the Pacific Coast Business Times.
