Kimberly Laurel is a certified freelance copyeditor and proofreader for authors and presses.
Her mission is to support writers in publishing with confidence. With an emphasis on reader comprehension and editorial transparency, she meticulously tackles each manuscript. She believes in partnering with an author to preserve their voice while ensuring clarity and a polished final product. Her approach includes providing both positive and constructive feedback, with suggested solutions for the latter.
She is well versed in the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed., while also able to swiftly adjust to in-house style guides. Editing references/bibliographies is one of her specialities, and she has significant experience conforming them to both Chicago and MLA. Through frequent courses, online classes, and self-paced studying, she constantly strives to update and fine-tune her manuscript editing skills.
She received her editing certification through the University of Washington. Prior to that, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) with Honors from Union College. She has been copyediting and proofreading technical documents for a decade; she moved into editing contemporary + speculative fiction and scholarly + academic nonfiction five or so years ago.
When not helping clients, she's being dragged down the street by her gigantic dog, attempting to Kondo-ize her life, or collecting giant mugs from which to drink way too much caffeine.
