I also tell them that writing comes with an obligation: if you want readers to invest in you and give you their time, you have to invest in your craft and give them your best shot. I believe that writing and revision are inseparable aspects of successful stories, be it fiction, narrative nonfiction or memoir. Revision is also, to me, the most exciting phase of writing a book. It's where all the puzzle pieces fall into place.
